Casio G-101L-2AV

This is a small review of the Casio G-101L-2AV. This is basically the same watch as the G-101-1AVMDS reviewed earlier. Some sites put this watch down as model G-101L-2AVMDS. I do know there is a G-101L-1AVMDS which is the same watch as the G-101-1AVMDS but with a 'leather' strap. Why 'leather'? Well we will get to that later.

Basic Specifications:

Module 2327
Antimagnetic Watch (ISO rated) - more on this later.
Electro-luminescent backlight (LCD only)
Dual Time (3 time zone possible)
Stopwatch: 1/100 second, measuring capacity: 23:50'59.99", measuring units 1/100 seconds (60 minutes) 1 second (after 60 minutes), elapsed time
Daily alarm
Timekeeping: Analogue: 3 hands - hour, minutes, seconds Digital - Hours, minutes, seconds (12/ 24 hour format)
Calendar: Month, date, day (auto calendar to 2039)
Size: 49.6 X 47.8 X 15.7 mm
Weight: 49.8 g
Battery: CR 2016

It is lighter as compared to the G-101. This is due to the lighter leather strap. The watch is metallic blue in colour, but it is not 'bling' metallic. The 'G-SHOCK' is in white and the rest of the wording the same colour as the bezel. The dial is black, but instead of having a textured inner circle, it spots a chequered design, much like carbon fibre layout. The hour hand is not rendered in red.

As earlier stated the watch comes with a 'leather' strap. As such it comes fitted with the adaptor ends to allow the one piece strap to be fitted. This also allows the watch to be outfitted with a zulu strap. The strap size is 23 mm, as such a 22 mm zulu strap would be the correct size. Using a 24 mm zulu would cause stress on the adapter ends.

The adapters. It is actually darker blue as compared to the bezel and it is not metallic. The markings are H3 and H4.

The snake like thing you see below is the leather strap. It is in a very bad condition (watch is unworn). As you can see from the photographs, it is not really leather but it is textured to look like leather. It looks like some form of cloth covered with leather like material. The weave pattern in the center of the strap is very beautiful and I think it would be better if the entire strap was made with that weave. The middle of the strap is wider as this is where the watch sits.

The buckle is made in China.

This is what the watch looks like without the strap. I guess it is time to look for a zulu strap for the watch. Sadly it is very difficult to find zulu or nato strap in Taiwan.

The case back is again standard Casio. However what is interesting is the made in data. Unlike the G-101, which is Japan movement, cased in Thailand, this watch is Japan movement but cased in Malaysia. Additionally if you look at the bezel you will notice that the metallic effect is not applied to the bottom of the bezel. It is matte blue.

There you have the short review of the G-101L-2AV. Now comes the next part of the story. Before I started to take the photographs for this review, I notice that the watch was dirty. So below are the photographs of the watch case and bezel as I took the watch apart to clean it.

As you can see, the case is pretty thick, in fact it is 12 mm thick. I believe this is due to its 'antimagnetic' capabilities. I like the fact that the case is thick. It gives me some confidence of its G-Shock capabilities.

The bezel in its blue metallic glory.

Overall I like this watch as I have always like analogue/ digital display watches. The fact that I can fit it with zulu strap makes it one up in my books. It is a large watch and it does make it presence felt.

  1. Hello Ivan,

Interesting G-Shock model. As I find the G-100 with resin straps look a bit small on my, I like the G-100/101's with this type of straps (or double velcro). They make the watch appear somewhat bigger.

Is the strap the original strap? I can't remember I have seen this type of strap on a G-Shock before, though it could have been made particular only for this model. If you can't find a matching strap, the 12 Beasts strap does fit too.

    Cheers,

    Sjors

  2. Hi Sjors,

Yes the strap is original. Sad that I have never used the watch and the strap is already in bad shape. I am looking for the original replacement strap but so far no good news. I have a 'zulu' strap on order, 22 mm. Will post the pictures once I get it.

I don't have the 12 Beast, I have the other Chinese one. I think you have the red one, winter street fashion. I have the blue one.

    Regards,

    Ivan

  3. Hi Ivan,

I actually have the same blue G-100DM-2AJF. I think that's a very nice model too. If you could find a spare strap for that one, you can use that too. I looked at Tiktox, but the 12 Beasts straps are sold out :-(

    Cheers,

    Sjors

  4. Hi Sjors,

Thanks for checking on Tiktox for the strap. Sorry I meant you have the red dial G-100DM-2AJF. I have the blue dial G-100DM-8AJF.

    Regards,

    Ivan

  5. Hi guys.

I have the exact same watch model and was very dissapointed with the material strap the watch came with. it did however last me a few years, but on holiday (in the sea) the strap snapped.. thank the lord I was in shallow snorkelling water and not deep water.. I have just ordered a replacement Casio velcro strap from thei website http://www.watchbattery.co.uk/shop/Casio_Watch_Straps.shtml - I will post a picture when it arrives and I have first cleaned the watch and mounted it.

  6. Hi Paul,

Welcome to the blog. I guess the leather strap will eventually give way, more so if you swim in it. Anyway thanks for the link as to where we can get some original straps.

    Best regards,

    Ivan

  7. Hi Ivan,

I have some images of the replacement strap with the watch. I must say that I am pleased with the look and it compliments this already 'chunky' watch ... sadly I cannot upload them on here. Any ideas as to how I can get them up here for people to see?.
